Some
amusing pics of DH Dave's Mountain Bike Crash Injuries:
Downhill Dave's
left leg x-ray after surgery. This was a massive tibial plateau
fracture and the Kamlopps Surgeon stopped counting at 20 fractures.
He said he was considering amputating during surgery and told
me I'd likely never walk on it again.
The titanium
hardware consists of 12 bolts/ screws and the one big side plate.
After incredibly
intense therapy and training, I was actually able to make a
pretty full recovery and got back to racing 2 years after this
1998 crash at the National Downhill Mountain Bike Championships
at Sun Peaks Ski Resort. 2 years after the injury, I was actually
faster on the same race tracks than before the injury.
This injury
is the main reason for me building my Downhill Electric Mountain
Bike as the pain is constant and terrible and is worse when
I press down on the pedals like when climbing.
On an interesting
note, one of the racers that came to my aid, Duane Nickull from
Norco Factory Racing, ended up redoing his run and broke both
his arms in the exact same extreme slope near the top of the
course that I crashed at and ended up in hospital with me.
The following
year, this section which claimed many riders was ommitted.

This is
the pre-surgery x-ray of Downhill
Dave's right shoulder.
They should have operated at the hospital at the time of the
accident but for some reason did not. 5 months after the accident
the bones were still almost 2cm apart and would never fuse so
surgery was required.
This crash happened
during bike testing of a new all mountain bike from the Czech
Republic where I was doing urban freeriding in Downtown Vancouver
trying to break the dual suspension frame (to test its limits
before I began distributing it). Unfortunately I did not know
that the manufacturer had put light duty cross-country tubes
in and when I landed about a 6 foot concrete staircase jump
to flat the front tiire blew immediately, wrapped around the
fork and slammed me into the concrete. OOOPSSS!!!

This is
the after-surgery x-ray of Downhill
Dave's right shoulder.
The titanium
hardware consists of 6 bolts/ screws and the one big plate.
About a year
after the surgery, I actually had to have another surgery to
remove the titanium as it was binding in my shoulder and causing
extreme pain.
This
is the post surgery photo showing the staples closing up the incision
that I affectionately call my "Centipede".

Shown
above is Downhill Dave's badly broken left shoulder. Apparently
the scapula was broken in 6 places and took a long time to heal.
DH Dave also broke a few ribs at the same time and also shattered
his downhill helmet in this crash...

Check out my
documentary style short film showing the 3 days of testing
the downhill mountain biking capabilities of the new custom
made 2001 Norco Shore electric downhill mountain bike. Watch
the progressively more aggressive downhill trail testing first
at Grouse Mountain's new Downhill Mountain Bike Park in North
Vancouver, then on some famous trails on Mt. Seymour in North
Vancouver and finally a special midnight night shoot in a
pitch black local forest trail in Langley, BC. Complete with
interviews with Downhill Dave and a review of the results
after each testing session, featured is some fast paced single
track downhilling that may show that at 59 years old, Downhill
Dave may "still have it" after wondering for years
if he was just a washed up former semi-pro downhill racer
(laughs). Set to a thumping licensed soundtrack featuring
popular BC bands Cyanotic, Everlasting glow, Radio Killer
and Girth the goal of this film was to get used to the fresh
new motor system, points of power engagement and differences
in the overall bike weight for things like bunny hopping and
jumping. Hopefully, other new riders of electric downhill
mountain bikes can follow this progressive advice as they
get used to their new ebike:)

This is one
of my old race bikes built in 2000 and raced at Whistler,
Bear Mountain, Silver Star and many other races. I still use
it today and at last count it has over 8,000 km on it.
DH Dave's
2000 Norco VPS Downhill Mountain Bike Highlights:
8.5
inches or 220 mm rear wheel travel (stock was about 6.2")
achieved through DH Dave's custom made rear shock plates
White
Brothers DH3 front inverted downhill fork with long travel
kit (gives it about 7.5 inches travel), triple clamp with
White Brothers titanium direct mount stem and White Brothers
titanium downhill riser handlebar. At the time (and today)
the White Brothers DH3 was one of the lightest long travel
downhill forks at just under 7 pounds and is certainly one
of the stiffest you will ever find.

XT 27 speed drivetrain with Grip Shifters. Yes, even with
3 front chain rings, I have never once dropped the chain
thanks to my super simple and lightweight rear chain tensioner
arm that weighs just 30 grams.

Below are just a
few pics showcasing some of the custom work that I do:
Former
semi-pro downhill racer "Downhill" Dave Flather has been
operating Pinnacle Innovations since 1997. During that time I was
involved with downhill mountain bike racing right from the very start
the first year it was organized here in BC with races held at Blackcomb
Mountain in Whistler, BC. If I recall correctly that was around 1995.
Even as
a youngster I was heavily involved in cycling with BMX and actually
raced at the first organized BMX races in Vancouver held at the old
China Creek Velodrome in East Van. Over the years my passion for bikes
in general has led to many custom bike creations as well as being
heavily involved in the sport including:
Volunteering
to lead the Pedals and Pints adult mountain bike club and the
youth mountain bike club rides at John Henry Bike Shop in North
Van.
Volunteering
on trail conservation - including leading a a group of over 30
volunteers to reconstruct Sex Boy on Cypress Mountain.
Distributing
in Canada for Rohloff Speedhub internal rear transmission hubs.
This included sponsoring many local riders such as "Super
T" Tyler Klassen, "Dangerous" Dan Cowan and his
Flowriders as well as many others.
Filming
and releasing the mountain bike film titled "JUMP".
With my
racing and freeriding experience, I quickly found that I was breaking
frames. I first started racing on Giant ATX dual suspension mountain
bikes, then Mountain Cycle before sticking with Norco Downhill Mountain
Bikes. Even though the Norco's were well built, I was still able to
break their frames - even with their standard equipped 6" or
so rear wheel travel and up to 7 1/2" front fork travel with
my White Brothers inverted triple crown DH forks. Consequently, I
decided to look at the rear suspension and design ways to increase
the rear wheel travel. I found that by adding a longer travel rear
shock and modifying the shock linkage plates to offer not only numerous
head angle positions but also a variety of wheel travel positions.
In my latest shock link plate designs, I have also extended the length
of the shock link plates and fully equipped them with bearings on
all pivot points - including the lower shock bolt holes. Now I can
have as much as 10.2" of rear wheel travel on the yellow Norco
Electric Downhill Mountain Bike featured on this website.
Most importantly,
we will build your downhill electric mountain bike exactly
how you want it done! We also fully understand that what Men need
in a bike can be quite different from what Ladies want or need in
a bike.
